News Notes

Ambassador of Conscience Award

·         Amnesty International has withdrawn a prestigious human rights award from Myanmar Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi, accusing her of perpetuating human rights abuses by not speaking out about violence against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

·         The international human rights group named Suu Kyi as its 2009 Ambassador of Conscience Award recipient when she was still under house arrest for her opposition to Myanmar's oppressive military junta. 

Golden Peacock at IFFI 2018

·         Donbass' directed by Sergei Loznista has won the coveted Golden Peacock Award at the 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which concluded in Goa on November 28, 2018.

1st World Agriculture Prize

·         Renowned agriculture scientist and the chief architect of the green revolution in India, MS Swaminathan, was awarded the first World Agriculture Prize for his contributions to Indian agriculture by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on October 26.

·         It carries prize money of $1,00,000 (Rs. 73,45,500), and is instituted by the nongovernmental Indian Council of Food and Agriculture.

Knight of the Legion of Honour

·         French Ambassador to India Alexandre Zeigler on November 28 honoured global software major Wipro Chairman Azim Premji with the highest French civilian award 'Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur' (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in Bengaluru, in recognition of his contribution to the Indian IT industry and philanthropy.

·         The Legion of Honour, instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is the highest civilian award given by the French Republic for Outstanding service to France, regardless of the nationality of the recipients.

Hima Das

·         Teenage sprit sensation Hima Das, who won three medals, including gold in 4400m women's relay at the Asian Games and a historic gold medal at the U-20 World Championship in Finland, has been appointed India's first ever Youth Ambassador by UNICEF.

Sunil Arora

·         The Cenre has announced the appointment of senior-most election commissioner Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner.

·         A Chief Election Commissioner or an EC can have tenure of six years or hold office till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

A.M. Naik

·         A. M. Naik has been appointed as Chairman of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

Arvind Saxena

·         The President has appointed Shri Arvind Saxena as Chairman, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Alyque Padamsee

·         Alyque Padamsee, 90 who was known for his role as Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the film Gandhi, died on November 17.

·         Padamsee was widely regarded as the Father of modern Indian advertising, as he founded Lintas, which is considered one of the top advertising agencies in the country.

·         He was the man who gave us iconic ads like Liril with the girl in the waterfall, Hamara Bajaj, the Kamasutra couple and many such memorable commercials.

Stan Lee

·         Stan Lee, a writer and editor often credited with helping American comics grow up by redefining the notion of a superhero, including the self-doubting Spider-Man, the bickering Fantastic Four, the swaggering Iron Man and the raging Incredible Hulk, died on November 12.

·         Mr. Lee's name became synonymous with the company that would become Marvel Comics, which he joined as a teenage assistant and stayed with for much of his adult life.

Global University Employability Ranking

·         Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi are two institutions which made it to the top 100 list of the Global University Employability Ranking 2018.

Mary Kom Creates History

·         Mary Kom Created History on November 24, 2018 by winning her sixth world championship gold at the 10th World Women's Boxing Championships, held in New Delhi, India.

·         Mary Kom won the sole gold for India by beating Ukraine's Hanna Okhota in a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the 48kg category summit bout.

·         Another Indian boxer, Sonia Chahal claimed the silver medal in 57kg bout, after she lost to Wahner Ornella Gabriele of Germany in the finals.

World Chess Championship 2018

·         The World Chess Championship was a match between the reigning world champion since 2013, Magnus Carlsen, and challenger Fabiano Caruana to determine the World Chess Champion.

 

550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak

·         Government of India has decided to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji from November, 2018 at national as well as international level in a befitting manner.

·         The year-long Celebration starting November 23rd this year will include a number of commemorative as well as constructive activities will be taken up during the commemoration period.

·         Sultanpur Lodhi will be developed as a heritage city incorporating 'Pind Babe Nanak da.'

·         Sultanpur Lodhi railway station will be upgraded. A train will run passing through places associated with Guru Nanak dev.

Pather Panchali on BBC list of best foreign language films

·         Satyajit Ray's epic masterpiece, Pather Panchali, has been included in BBC's list of 100 best foreign language films and is the only film from India to feature in it.

·         Ray's film released in 1955 and the first in his "Apu" trilogy, was placed at number 15 in the list, which was topped by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

Jharsuguda Airport, Odisha Renamed

·         The Union Cabinet has approved renaming of Jharsuguda Airport, Odisha as "Veer Surendra Sai Airport, Jharsuguda".

Dharma Guardian 2018

·         Exercise DHARMA GURDIAN -2018, a joint military exercise between Indian & Japanese Armies, commenced at Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Vairengete, Mizoram, India on 01 November 2018.

INDRA 2018

·         India and Russia on November 27 conducted Indo-Russia Joint Military Exercise-INDRA 2018 in Madhya Pradesh's Jhansi.
